Our STRATA Pinot Noir is named for the layers of soil found in geology, representing a key element that imparts a unique terroir in our wines. Sourced from quality sites in the Russian River Valley, the fruit from each vineyard highlights site-specific personality that blends seamlessly to form one expressive Pinot Noir. Our STRATA Pinot Noir is terroir-driven with aromas of forest floor and dark cherry. The palate is full and complex with notes of cedar, cherry cola, dried cranberry and fleshy plum with a brush of ripe tannins that culminate in a long, smooth finish.

VITICULTURE NOTES

The year 2014 continued a three-year cycle of vintages characterized by warm, dry, excellent growing conditions. Described as the “year of the early,” 2014 saw early budbreak, early flowering, early veraison and early harvest. Ideal spring and summer weather, with a few well-timed heat spikes and cooling sessions, ushered in harvest at the end of July, marking the earliest in J history. During the long growing season, we watered only when needed, mindful to use irrigation only to keep the vines in balance and honor the integrity of the fruit. The result was beautiful, small- to medium-berry clusters that produced balanced wine with good acidity and ample fruit.

WINEMAKING NOTES

Whole grape clusters were hand-harvested, hand-sorted, de-stemmed and gravity-fed into small, three- to ten-ton fermenters for whole-berry fermentation. Following fermentation, our STRATA Pinot Noir aged in tight-grain French oak barrels (38% new) for 13 months in our cool cellars, following a specific barrel regime to highlight the characteristics of each vineyard lot.
