Our J Vineyards & Winery 2011 Vintage Brut opens with aromas of baked green apple, Kefir lime and toasted cardamom. On the rich, velvety palate, intricate notes of baked pie crust and caraway-rye bread lead to fruit flavors of Anjou pear and white peach. Subtle hints of raspberry feature on the crisp, lively finish. Pair this sparkler with herbed goat cheese with lavender almonds, caviar beurre blanc with Dover sole and green apple-parsnip purée.

Vintage Comments

The 2011 growing season in Russian River Valley started later than usual due to an unseasonably wet and cool spring. Average temperatures were generally cooler throughout the growing season, pushing harvest to early September to ensure development of elegant, ripe fruit. With a balance between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this wine delivers outstanding varietal Pinot Noir characteristics enhanced by a brisk, acidic backbone and crispness from Chardonnay.

All of the grapes were hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without destemming, into our special French Coquard press for a gentle pressing. The juice was fermented in stainless steel, which allowed us to highlight aromatics, and kept separate until the final blending decision, which occurred in November 2011.

As is customary for methode traditionnelle sparkling wine production, the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle. During the next five years, the wine was aged en tirage in our cellars, developing deeper complexity as the years went by. In early 2017, we carefully disgorged the bottles to collect and remove the yeast sediment. Following disgorging, a dosage of barrel-aged reserve wine was added for balance. This wine aged an additional six months on the cork before release.
