The 2013 J Blanc de Noirs begins with a light, creamy mousse that settles into flavors of alpine strawberry, lemon curd and apple blossom that shine on the crisp palate, culminating into notes of freshly baked croissant and toasted almond. We love this wine with lemon-ricotta stuffed crepes with strawberry compote, roasted guinea hen with porcini mushrooms or alpine-style farmhouse cheese with persimmon.

Vintage Comments

The year 2013 presented a stellar growing season and was the second in a series of vintages characterized by warm, dry and generally excellent growing conditions. A near-perfect flowering and fruit set in the spring ushered in a summer free of rain, followed by a balanced growing season that extended into the fall. Harvest was one of the earliest in J’s history and began in early August, when we began hand-harvesting whole grape clusters at night when they reached maturity. This beautiful vintage delivered wines of intensity and finesse.

Winemaking

All of the grapes were hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without destemming, into our special French Coquard press for a gentle pressing. We used only the cuvée free run juice during fermentation, which occurred in stainless steel tanks. We kept all lots separate until the final blending decision, which occurred in November 2013. The blend rested on lees for five months before bottling.

As is customary for Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine production, the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle. The wine was aged nearly three years en tirage in our cellars, developing deeper complexity as the years went by. In late 2016, we carefully riddled the bottles to collect and remove the yeast sediment. Following disgorging, a small amount of dosage wine was added for balance. This wine aged an additional six months on the cork before release.

The 2012 growing season in the Russian River Valley was phenomenal. Mild weather with little rainfall provided the ideal conditions for ripening, leading to a smooth harvest. The grapes from this vintage have created well-balanced wines with bright acidity and superb flavor concentration. A combination of exclusively Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, all of the grapes for this wine were selected from our Nicole’s Vineyard.
