The 2009 Vintage Brut opens with delightful apple blossom, peach purée and almond notes making it another classic example.   Lively Meyer lemon acidity, along with flavors of red berries, golden apples and bright minerality, refresh the palate with each sip. With its elegant mousse and a hint of pastry pair this sparkling wine with miyagi oysters topped with a classic mignonette or seared scallops with roasted parsnip risotto.

Vintage Comments

In 2009, the Russian River Valley experienced an early spring that was unusually dry and warm. The average temperatures during the growing season were cooler than in previous years, punctuated by a few heat spikes in late summer. Ultimately, harvest got underway in September, ensuring optimal ripeness and balanced acidity.

All of the grapes were hand-harvested into small quarter-ton bins and placed as whole clusters, without destemming, into our special French Coquard press for a gentle pressing. The juice was fermented in stainless steel, which allowed us to highlight aromatics, and kept separate until the final blending decision, which occurred in November 2009. The following month, we cold stabilized the wine to remove excess tartrates, then bottled in spring 2010.

As is customary for Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine production, the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle. During the next five years, the wine was aged en tirage in our cellars, developing deeper complexity as the years went by. In early 2015, we carefully riddled the bottles to collect and remove the yeast sediment. Following disgorging, a dosage of barrel-aged reserve wine was added for balance. This wine aged an additional nine months on the cork before release.
