The 2014 J Vineyards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir offers outstanding balance and opens with generous aromas of red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and spice. The palate delivers a lovely, smooth texture and notes of licorice, pomegranate and toast accented by a pleasing touch of red tea on the lingering finish.

Vintage Comments

The year 2014 continued a three-year cycle of vintages characterized by warm, dry, excellent growing conditions. Described as the “year of the early,” 2014 saw early budbreak, early flowering, early veraison and early harvest. Ideal spring and summer weather, with a few well-timed heat spikes and cooling sessions, ushered in harvest at the end of July, marking the earliest in J history. During the long growing season, we watered only when needed, mindful to use irrigation only to keep the vines in balance and honor the integrity of the fruit. The result was beautiful, small- to medium-berry clusters that produced balanced wine with good acidity and ample fruit.

The grapes for this Pinot Noir were sourced from cool areas throughout the Russian River Valley growing region. We hand-harvested whole grape clusters at 24.5 Brix, de-stemmed and gravity-fed them into small, three- to ten-ton open-top fermenters. Following a five-day cold soak, the must fermented for seven to ten days using Burgundy yeast and natural inoculums. The wine was drained to barrel to undergo ML in 100% French oak, approximately 30% of which was new. Each vineyard, block and clone was kept separate until blending in May, for a total of 99 different lots available for blending decisions.

This delicate but intensely flavored Pinot from J is a welcome alternative to richer, riper, more robust Pinots that get most of the love from consumers these days. Showing an earthy, forest floor nose with a hint of cola and bright aromas of strawberry and red raspberry, this is a finely tuned Pinot..."

It's so rich and spicy, offering tiers of raspberry and cherry preserves, ripe Christmas persimmons and pomegranates, and a delicious coating of smoky new oak. The tannin-acid balance is perfect."
