2016 J Pinot Noir, Bow Tie Vineyard

Our estate Bow Tie Vineyard Pinot Noir was crafted entirely from grapes grown on our Bow Tie Vineyard, located along the Westside Road corridor south of Healdsburg. This classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir opens with aromas of blueberry, dried apricot and anise. The smooth, refined palate has hints of ripe Bing cherry, dried cranberry, violets and clove backed by a subtle kiss of roasted mushroom and pine. Pair this Pinot Noir with roasted pork loin with farro risotto, roasted Cipollini onions and trumpet mushrooms with a fig and Pinot Noir demi-glace.

Vintage Comments

Our Bow Tie estate vineyard is located within the middle reach of the Westside Road, following the undulating bends of the Russian River, highlighting the unique terroir of ancient riverbeds deposited over millennia. The 2016 vintage in the Russian River Valley was warm and dry. Following suit with the four previous vintages, the year continued to be an earlier, more compact growing season. Plenty of winter rains and a warm spring brought on early budbreak and a warm, fast-paced summer growing season. Another early harvest, 2016 finished a full 10 days earlier than average. Consistent warm temperatures through September rewarded us with incredible intensity and depth of flavor.

Winemaking

The grapes for this Pinot Noir were hand-picked and placed into small, 1/2 ton bins. At the winery, the fruit was de-stemmed and gravity-fed them into small, three- to seven-ton open-top fermenters. Following a five- day cold soak, the must fermented for seven to 10 days using Burgundy yeast and natural inoculums, and was punched down four times a day during the peak of fermentation. The wine was drained to barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation in 100% French oak for six weeks, followed by 13 months of barrel aging. An additional 11 months’ maturation in bottle prior to release ensured optimal integration of tannin, acidity and phenolic character for ideal balance and drinkability on release.
