Our STRATA Pinot Noir is named for the layers of soil found in geology, representing a key element that imparts a unique terroir in our wines. Sourced from quality sites in the Russian River Valley, the fruit from each vineyard highlights site-specific personality that blends seamlessly to form one expressive Pinot Noir. Our 2013 STRATA Pinot Noir begins with aromas of roasted cherry, raspberry and fig. The palate is deep and savory, with flavors of dark cherry, black olive and dried cranberry. Notes of cedar and baking spices complement the fruit flavors for an incredibly unforgettable wine with velvety tannins and a pleasing finish.

Vintage Comments

Warm and dry, 2013 presented a stellar growing season. Harvest was one of the earliest in J’s history, in late August, offering abundant grape clusters of extremely high quality. A near perfect flowering and fruit set in the spring ushered in a summer free of rain and a balanced growing season into the fall. Although some heat spikes rushed harvest a bit, the weather cooperated fully.

Winemaking

Sourced from the highest quality sites in the Russian River Valley, the fruit from each vineyard highlights a site-specific personality that blends seamlessly to form one expressive Pinot Noir. To craft this wine, whole grape clusters were carefully hand-harvested at night, destemmed, hand-sorted then gravity fed into 3-10 ton tanks for whole-berry fermentation. The wine then aged in tight-grain French oak barrels for 13 months (32% new), following a specific barrel regime to highlight the characteristics of each vineyard lot.
