Our 2015 Barrel 16 Chardonnay opens with aromas of golden delicious apple, sweet ginger and tangerine essence, easing into a silky palate of Asian pear, stone fruit and toasted baking spice. Notes of toffee and dried apricot linger on the complex, layered finish. We recommend trying this wine with aged gouda with vanilla poached apricots or roasted wild King salmon in citrus fumé with caramelized root vegetables.

Viticulture Notes

The 2015 vintage was early, short and warm in the Russian River Valley. We had a lot of rainfall early on in December and January, filling our reserves and pushing up the growing season. Budbreak occurred in mid-March, and temperatures from March through May gradually increased, setting the table for the earliest Harvest ever for J. In May, cooler temperatures slowed down growth and led to a long bloom period that lowered yields. These conditions coupled with constant coastal breezes provided an ideal combination of elements to produce concentrated fruit flavors and a crisp acidity.

Winemaking Notes

Barrel 16 was created to honor the best of our estate vineyards. The grapes are sourced exclusively from our vineyards located throughout the Russian River Valley and, during the aging period, the winemaking team chooses the vintage’s best barrels for this elegant blend. The sites chosen for this blend represent the diversity of microclimates found in the Russian River Valley and feature an interesting combination of clones (Old Robert Young, clone 17), which each subtly add personality to the wine.

Whole grape clusters were hand-harvested at 24 Brix then gently pressed. A long, slow barrel fermentation of the free-run juice allowed the wine to develop a mélange of flavors ranging from ripe citrus to spicy clove. For aging, our medium toasted tight-grain French oak barrels (42% new) lend hints of toasty crème brûlée without overpowering the fruit. A three-month malolactic fermentation delivered the wine’s creamy, silky character.
