2016 J Chardonnay, Bow Tie Vineyard

Our Bow Tie Vineyard Chardonnay is a classic expression of the aromatic and exotic Z clone, a descendant of Muscat. This clone gives our Bow Tie Chardonnay its expansive aromas of white florals, pineapple, ginger and Madagascar vanilla. This silky-smooth Chardonnay offers a subtle caress of oak throughout the palate, with rich notes of ripe Anjou pear, golden apple, apricot and crème brûlée balanced by bright, citrusy hints of lemon and Kaffir lime. Pair this wine with burrata with peach and heirloom tomato salad and a broken pecan vinaigrette, halibut with fresh corn purée and buttered Romano beans or Mimolette cheese with a spiced apricot chutney.

Vintage Comments

One of our estate vineyards, Bow Tie is located within the middle reach of the Westside Road, following the undulating bends of the Russian River. The 16 acres of Chardonnay we select for this wine are planted on a gentle slope that leads to the banks of the Russian River, highlighting the unique terroir of ancient riverbeds deposited over millennia.

The 2016 vintage in the Russian River Valley was warm and dry. Following suit with the four previous vintages, the year continued to be an earlier, more compact growing season. Plenty of winter rains and a warm spring brought on early budbreak and a warm, fast-paced summer growing season. Another early harvest, 2016 finished a full 10 days earlier than average. Consistent warm temperatures through September rewarded us with incredible intensity and depth of flavor.

Winemaking

Whole clusters were hand-harvested between 22.5-24.0 Brix then pressed gently. Free-run juice and press juice were fermented separately using a combination of indigenous and proprietary yeast strains from Burgundy. A long, slow fermentation allowed the wine to develop a mélange of aromas and flavors. We select tight-grain, medium-toast French oak barrels that impart nuanced spice characters to the wine. Weekly bâtonnage during a three-month long malolactic sur lie fermentation lends the wine its silky, creamy mouthfeel.
