Flinty and aromatic, this distinctive wine offers aromas of lemon cream, orange peel and chamomile. On the palate, a soft vanilla creaminess gives way to crisp lemongrass, ripe pear and lime zest complimented by zippy minerality and acidity. The 2013 STRATA Chardonnay is a superb "bridge" wine for many salads, but also pairs with main courses such as lemon-roasted chicken breast, decadent fettuccine alfredo and shellfish with lemon butter.

Vintage Comments

Warm and dry, 2013 presented a stellar growing season. Chardonnay harvest was one of the earliest in J’s history, in late August, offering abundant grape clusters of extremely high quality. A near perfect flowering and fruit set in the spring ushered in a summer free of rain and a balanced growing season into the fall. Although some heat spikes rushed harvest a bit, the weather cooperated fully.

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine are sourced from stellar vineyards located throughout Russian River Valley. In addition to showcasing expert winemaking blending skills, STRATA Chardonnay reflects the terroir — the melding of vineyard location, soils, clone types, and weather influence – in this ideal, cool-climate growing region. The distinctive stratified sand and gravel soils of the Russian River Valley play an important role in flavor development.

Whole grape clusters were hand harvested at 23.9 brix, then pressed gently. To ferment the free-run juice, we used a combination of indigenous and proprietary yeast strains from Burgundy. A long, slow fermentation allowed the wine to develop a refined intermingling of fruit flavors. For aging, our tight-grain, French oak barrels are toasted to a medium level, giving the wine a hint of racy, toasty character and elegant vanilla flavor, without overpowering the fruit. A three-month malolactic “sur-lie” fermentation delivered the wine’s creamy, silky character.

Preserved lemon and lemon curd combine for dramatic effect in this wine sourced from three estate-grown vineyard sites. Fleshy on the palate, it continues the lemon theme throughout, with weighty additions of oak and crème brûlée that hit their peak on the finish."
