2006 J Pinot Noir, Nonny's Vineyard

Return to Current Releases

Vineyard
The fruit for this new J wine was harvested from selected vines of Nonny’s Vineyard – a 70-acre lot adjacent to River Road in the Russian River Valley.  Its four blocks of Pinot Noir were planted in 2000 to three different Dijon clones.  The soil in this vineyard is Arbuckle Series, a reddish loam with gravel striations.

Winemaking
Selected grape clusters were hand-harvested, delivered cool to the winery, hand-sorted and processed in our open-top fermenters. Our minimalist approach to making Pinot Noirs is designed to yield a wine that reflects, in both aroma and flavor profile, the location in which it was grown.

Aging
The wine was drawn into 100% French oak barrels, nearly 30% of them new, soon after it was pressed. The malolactic fermentation was completed in the barrels and the wine remained on its lees in barrels for twelve months. Only selected barrels made it to the final blend, bottled in December 2007.  Further bottle aging at our cellars is part of J’s commitment to only release      wines that are in balance and ready for enjoyment.

Tasting Notes
The 2006 Nonny’s Vineyard Pinot Noir is a sophisticated wine, with excellent structure and texture.  Its soft earthy aromas of truffles, smoke and cocoa marry with dark fruit, cooked strawberries and dry rose petals.  The flavors are a balanced and complex mix of boysenberries, and blueberries with a long dusty, herbal finish.
