Russian River Valley
Sonoma County's Russian River Valley produces some of the most extraordinary
wine in the world. The Russian River Valley is home to J Vineyards & Winery,
owned and operated by Judy Jordan.
Quality begins in the vineyard. J Vineyards & Winery farms just over 250 acres
in California's Russian River Valley where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
varietals thrive. The combination of soil diversity and cool coastal fog
enables our fruit to mature slowly for ideal aroma and flavor complexities
in our wines.
J's diverse
hillside and valley floor vineyards
are located throughout the middle reach of
the valley. Each one of our vineyards offers distinctive
flavors to the wine and every growing season is unique. Yet,
the consistency and quality of J is discernible in every
vintage with a spellbinding spectrum of layered
flavors.
At J, the art of winemaking is considered
a sublime assemblage of tradition, innovation and a touch of magic.
The Setting: Sonoma County's Russian River Valley
- Located seventy miles northeast of San Francisco's Golden Gate
- Less than fifteen miles from the Pacific Ocean
- Established as an American Viticultural Appellation in 1983
- Often compared to Burgundy's climate
Climate: It's the fog!
- Coastal cool maritime fog incursion
- 115 - 120 days of slow, even heat accumulation from Spring budbreak to harvest
- Longer hang time on the vine translates to optimal sugar and acid balance
- Rainfall averages 35-40 inches per year, November through May

Vineyard Diversity: Seven in all
- Combination of climate and soils ensure that wine grapes thrive in the J vineyards
- The vineyards at J are defined by three topographies: hillside, benchland,
and valley floor
- Hillside vineyards dominated by red loam and shallow soils
- Valley vineyards comprised of bale loam, alluvial soil, rich nutrients over
gravel beds
- Deep gravel deposits assure good drainage and healthy, productive vines
Clones and Rootstock
- The vineyards at J boast fourteen different Pinot Noir clones on six
different rootstocks
- Five clones of Chardonnay on three different rootstocks
- Clonal variety is essential in order to ensure "layers" of character
- Each clone offers aromas and essences that broaden complexity and enhance texture
