2001 J Zinfandel, Russian River Valley
Return to Wine Library
The Zin Story
In mid 2001, a small grower of old-vine Zinfandel approached us, looking for a
home for some unsold fruit from a vineyard located just a few miles away from the
winery on Limerick Lane. We could not refuse the offer.
Processing
The fruit was hand-picked into half ton bins and then crushed into a small
open top tank. The wine was left to soak on the skins for six days
post-fermentation, it was then pressed into barrels for malolactic
fermentation and ageing.
Ageing
Both three- year -old French oak and new American/French oak combination
barrels were used.
Tasting Notes
The style was designed to showcase the wine's spiciness and complexity.
Blackberry, dried cherry and plum notes with slight floral and white pepper
aromas greet you on the nose. The body is medium to full with a lingering
finish of pepper, smoke and slight herbal notes. Because of it's lively
acidity, this wine will continue to improve with age through the next
decade.
