2003 J Viognier, Hoot Owl Vineyard, Alexander Valley
Return to Wine Library
The Vineyard
The 2003 J Viognier is made entirely of Viognier grapes from the
Hoot Owl Creek vineyard in the Alexander Valley.
Processing
Whole grape clusters were hand-harvested, then pressed gently in
J's Coquard press. This uniquely gentle press minimizes the extraction of
harsh components from the grape skins.
Ageing
50% of the juice was aged in 60-gallon French oak barrels. A partial
malolactic fermentation, designed to reduce acidity and increase
complexity was carreid-out on 50% of the juice. The remaining juice was fermented
at
cool temperatures in a stainless steel tank to preserve the intense
fruit character of the grape.
Tasting Notes
This wine displays J's signature style: the initial aromas are both
fruity and floral (orange blossom, peaches, nectarines and honey), they lead
the way to a lush and lively mid-palate that begs to be paired with food.
The long finish shows peach, apricot, vanilla and tangerine flavors and just
enough acidity to clear the palate for the next sip. This wine is no wall-flower,
it was kissed by the Sonoma sun and is as vibrant and outgoing as the people
who made it. Cheers!
