| Robert Thomas Vineyard |
This 47-acre property is one of the westernmost vineyards in the Russian River Valley appellation. The soil in this vineyard is classified as Zamora silty clay loam. In the lower part of the vineyard the soil rests on layers of gravel deposited by the nearby Russian River. While on the upper part it is mixed with rocky Goldridge loam soils.
Robert Thomas is a very cool location with southeastern exposure, offering a slower ripening and longer hang time.
It used to be a hop-farm, then an apple ranch before Dr. Ballard planted grapes on it. Fruit here ripens very slow, and the wines show layers of delicate fruit with great backbone and finesse. Currently it is a relatively young vineyard with tremendous potential as can be tasted from the single vineyard bottlings.
