| Nicole's Vineyard |
A hillside property east of the Russian River, the soil is a reddish loam with some gravel veins running through it. Rows are planted to conform to hill contours. This vineyard is the one that inspired us to produce our first non-sparkling wine (the 1994 Nicole's Vineyard Pinot Noir). Perched 100 feet over the valley floor with commanding 360° views of the region, this 42-acre vineyard is a unique gem; the poor soil naturally limits the vine's vigor and thus concentrates berry flavors. The elevation serves to protect the shoots from spring frosts, and the nearby eucalyptus grove perfumes the air with light fennel notes that carry into the wine.
Block No. 4
26.8 acres. It yields wines of deep color and an expansive mouth-feel. Aromas are of black-cherry, violets, fennel and licorice. Additionally, 3.0 acres are planted to Pinot Meunier and used solely for the J Vintage Brut program.
Block No. 6
8.0 acres. This block is a grower's dream. Naturally balanced vines yield a complex and layered wine that helps make this a great component in our Russian River Valley blend as well as provide a great selection for the single vineyard bottling.
Block No. 7
7.0 acres. This block is very low yielding. Not only does the rocky soil limit the vines from producing a good-sized crop, the wild turkeys seem to prefer this spot for their summertime picnics.
