| Eastside Ranch Vineyard |
This is where J began as an independent winery and where our first vineyards were planted. Soil here is a fertile loam deposited on a bed of gravel. The older plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are planted at a traditional density of 454 vines per acre and trained to a quadrilateral cordon and a lyre trellis. The new plantings are denser (850 vines per acre) and trained to a vertical trellis.
Block 1 - Pinot Noir
18.9 acres. Fruit from this vineyard goes mainly to our sparkling wine cuvées, and a small quantity of the Martini clone (#13) is used for our RRV Pinot Noir Bottling.
Block 2 - Chardonnay
34.8 acres. Fruit from this block goes to our sparkling wine cuvées as well as to our still Chardonnay. Located on the valley floor, in one of the coldest areas of the region, the vineyard is often engulfed in fog until noon during the summer. This vineyard is often dry-farmed to maximize fruit flavor concentration.
Block 2A - Chardonnay
9.5 acres. This block produces intensely flavored and complex wines and is one source of fruit for the J Chardonnay as well as the Vintage Brut.
Block 3 - Chardonnay
14.4 acres. Planted next to a gravel pit on very deep and fertile soil, this block's vigor is tamed by cover crops that compete for moisture and nutrients and selective thinning throughout the growing season.
Block 5 - Pinot Noir
13.3 acres. The grapes from this vineyard are used for still wine production as well as for the J Brut. This vineyard produces well balanced fruit that mostly goes to the Estate Pinot Noir bottling.
