The vineyards
The 2007 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a wonderful expression of diverse Russian River Valley Pinot Noir Vineyards. These sixteen barrels are personally selected by our winemaker to honor the vineyards wideranging microclimates and soils.
Processing
Grape clusters were hand-harvested at night to ensure the best conditions. While still cool, the fruit was hand-sorted, gently destemmed and gravity fed into our open-top fermenters for whole berry fermentation. Daily tastings determine the precise balance of fruit and tannins before the wine goes to barrel. Barrel 16 highlights our winemaker’s passion to produce a far more interesting wine then any of its singular components.
Aging
When ready, the juice flowed freely into 100% French oak barrels, 30% new, where slow, gentle malolactic fermentation took place. The long secondary fermentation on light lees allowed for natural bâtonnage developing a velvety, full mid-palate. After aging for 12 months in Burgundian barrels, each lot was evaluated for balance and complexity. Select barrels were blended and returned to barrel for an additional three months, allowing complete resolution of all components before bottling.
Tasting Notes
The 2007 Barrel 16 Pinot Noir is a luxurious wine with a distinct complexity and resolved balance of tannins. The wine opens with subtle floral aromas of violet followed by cherry, plum and blueberry plus hints of licorice and spice. Rich and supple flavors of vanilla cream and strawberry fill the mouth complementing the nose and evolve into a long, lingering finish of cinnamon, clove and anise.
