The 2013 J Vineyards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a lush, ruby-red wine that vibrantly showcases firm, food-friendly acidity and plenty of black fruit flavors. Flavors of black currant, plum and tart cherry fill the glass. A kiss of earthiness makes this a perfect pairing with a mushroom soup. 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Vintage Comments

Most producers, growers, and wine critics agree that 2012 was one of the best California vintages in decades. A near perfect flowering and fruit-set in the spring, with a moderate to warm summer that was free of rain and mildew, contributed to stellar growing conditions. This pattern continued all the way through harvest. The quality of the juice was stunning, but the unexpected prize was the additional tonnage beyond our early estimates.
Winemaking

At J, we are devoted to the concept of terroir in the Russian River Valley. Our 2012 J Vineyards Pinot Noir is a reflection of this vintage, the vineyards, and winemaking techniques. Sourced from four of our estate vineyards within the Russian River Valley, the fruit from each vineyard highlights site-specific characteristics that blend seamlessly to form one expressive wine. The winemaking team destemmed and fermented the grapes in small, 3 to 10 ton fermenters, then drained the wine into tight-grain French oak barrels. Our barrel regimen gently influenced the wine, while still allowing the floral and earthy flavors to take center stage.

  • 88 Points - Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine for 2012 Russian River Valley Estate Grown Pinot Noir

This very affable and eminently accessible Pinot goes for juicy immediacy with a touch of soft oaky spice sitting lightly atop its full, very easy-to-taste, ripe-cherry fruit. It has plenty of weight and is balanced ever so slightly to softness in a style that speaks more to near-term enjoyment than to prolonged keeping. Enjoy it over the next couple of years alongside the likes of roasted pork loin with a slightly sweet glaze."

It's hard to imagine a better Pinot for drinking right now.  It's so rich and spicy, offering tiers of raspberry and cherry preserves, ripe Christmas persimmons and pomegranates, and a delicious coating of smoky new oak.  The tannin-acid balance is perfect.”

  • 90 Points & Very Highly Recommended– California Grapevine for 2012 Russian River Valley Estate Grown Pinot Noir

Medium light ruby; attractive, earthy, herbal, spicy, raspberry and cherry fruit aroma with hints of vanilla and forest floor; medium body; supple, plummy, red fruit flavors with some depth along with a slightly creamy mouthfeel; medium tannin; lingering aftertaste. Showed some elegance and very enjoyable to taste now. Very highly recommended.”
